Driving for Flex – Rural Country

The lovely rural back roads. What’s not to like? If you’ve driven for Amazon Flex long enough you know that there’s plenty.  From gravel roads to gates and dogs. The rural country is a challenge for even the most experienced drivers. If you’re going to make it, you need to be prepared. Here’s a few tips.

Offline Maps:

Absolutely crucial when you find yourself on a rural route. In the country GPS is unreliable. Luckily some wizard created offline maps. My preferred app is Offline Maps & Navigation for Android. Be sure to get this app and download all relevant maps before you head out for delivery.

Deep Breaths:

I don’t want to get all Dr. Phil on you but seriously it pays to remain calm on these rural routes. Don’t try to rush it. Take in the scenery and relax. One package at a time.

Bags:

Many people living out in the country have gates. They won’t always give you the code. So prepare to have a few bags to put the packages in so they don’t get wet. Put the package behind the gate, take picture, and bam! On to the next one.

Scary Signs:

Don’t ya be trespassing on my land! You’ll encounter a lot of these signs on rural routes. They’re not meant for you. Amazon delivery drivers aren’t trespassers. With that said, there are other dangers to look out for.

Scary Dogs:

Oh yeah. Big mean scary barking dogs. When you live in the country you let your dog run loose apparently. It’s very common to encounter loose dogs on rural routes. Look out for them, always.

LONG Driveways:

Many times you’ll have to drive down a mile long dirt/gravel private driveway on the country routes. It’s frustrating. Don’t plan on keeping your car clean while on these routes.

Spare Tire:

It’s always a good idea to make sure your spares in good shape. Even more so on these country roads. If you haven’t got a spare look into getting a tire repair kit to keep in the trunk.

It’s not all bad:

With the right outlook country routes can be fun. They’re typically more challenging than a regular suburb route. With the right preparedness and attitude you’ll be on them country roads singing take me home West Virginia!

Appreciate it. Be safe and Flex on!
