How to Start Delivering for Amazon Flex

So you want to become an Amazon Flex driver? Great! It’s really simple. When you search this topic online you’re likely to find a lot of replies from Flex drivers who will try to scare you away. They’ll say things like “It isn’t worth it” and “You won’t make any money”. This may be true for some people but everyone’s situation is different. It may be worth it for you and I encourage you to ignore all negativity. Try it out for yourself and then decide if it’s worth it.

Vehicle Requirements

You can use pretty much any car when delivering Wholefoods and Prime Now orders. These orders consist of grocery bags that’re full of stuff. You need enough space to fit a bunch of them in your car.

For Logistics you’ll drive to an Amazon warehouse and pickup a bunch of boxes full of stuff, also known as Amazon.com orders. For this you will need a 4-door, mid-sized sedan or larger vehicle. Basically any car that has 4 doors. If you drive a tiny 4 door car I recommend that you pick up a 3 hour shift for your first time to get a feel for it.

You don’t need a new fancy car, you can use an absolute beater if you want. The vehicle information section in the Amazon Flex app goes all the back to 1993. I have personally delivered in a 94 Toyota Tercel with no issues.

It’s better to have a bigger car so you won’t be so cram-packed but it’s doable in a tiny 4 door car, just be sure to clear the trunk out so you can utilize all of the space.

Phone Requirements

  • An Android device with Android 6.0 or newer
  • iPhone 6s or newer with iOS 13 or higher

You’ll want to make sure that the GPS and camera works well. You’ll be using the camera a lot to scan packages and to take pictures of your deliveries. The GPS obviously will be used for navigating to the delivery locations. You probably won’t want to bother inputting all the addresses into a different GPS device. Using the phone GPS is the quickest way.

Is it worth it?

I’ve been a Flex driver for 4 years and it’s been worth it for me. As said, everyone’s situation is different. I personally rather do Amazon Flex then work in an office somewhere. Even if I would make more money in the office I like doing Amazon Flex because I decide my own schedule.

I definitely recommend that you give it shot and decide for yourself.

Advice

Amazon Flex can be a fun job and also incredibly frustrating. I recommend that you bring a good attitude and lots of patience your first time. Have a music playlist or podcast ready and just relax, take it one delivery at time. If you’re feeling nervous about getting started, don’t. Amazon Flex is a simple gig. You pick stuff up, you deliver it. That’s it. Don’t let other drivers scare you away.

Good luck! I hope that you enjoy the gig. Amazon Flex is not without it’s frustrations but it can turn out to be a great gig for some people. It’s certainly worth trying and it’s really simple to get started.

Even though Amazon Flex drivers are in competition with each other we’re always looking out for one another. Check Facebook for local Flex driver groups to ask questions specific to your area. There’s also a great Reddit community here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AmazonFlexDrivers/
