Today I learned: Amazon Flex is Doing Deliveries from Food Banks

With so much of the media being on the “Jeff Bezos hate bandwagon” you rarely get to hear about the positive news relating to Amazon. Today I learned that Amazon has partnered with food banks to help deliver food to people in need. This includes the use of Amazon Flex drivers.

Delivering 6 million meals to underserved and vulnerable populations

Similar to how Whole Foods deliveries work, food bank workers prepare and package the goods and Flex drivers come along to pick it up and deliver it straight to people’s doors.

This is the best idea I’ve seen come out of Amazon in awhile. This is clearly not a mere PR stunt, it’s making a real difference in these unprecedented times. As an Amazon Flex driver I want to be a part of it.

How to get involved

Apparently this program has only been available in 7 cities including Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

Amazon has said that they’re “committed to expanding to 25 U.S. cities and other international locations”, so be on the lookout for this program in your city.

If your interested be sure to ask around the warehouse to see if they have any info about this program coming up in your city. We’ll be keeping a close eye on it and update if any more info becomes available.

If you have info about this program or have participated in it let us know in the comments about how it works, that would be much appreciated.

Thank you, be safe and Flex on!

More Info

For Flex drivers these blocks will be paid like a normal route and they will show up under the “Third Party” station.

You will likely receive several heavy boxes of food so be sure that you’re prepared to do some heaving lifting. Typically these blocks are reported by drivers to not have as many stops as a normal logistics route but the packages are big and bulky.

So if you’d rather drive less but lift more this may be a good block choice for you and you get to help people in the process!
